A new, inexpensive, simple and rapid bioassay for sodium monofluoroacetate (compound 1080) was developed using bacteria. Two 1080-sensitive isolates ( Bacillus sp. DHW and Acinetobacter sp. DHW) from local aquatic environments were tested on different agar media using the disc diffusion technique. Both bacteria exhibited zones of growth inhibition surrounding the 1080 discs that were linearly proportional to the concentrations (log10 ) of 1080. Preliminary studies indicate that this technique can be used for assaying 1080 in environmental and biological samples. 相似文献

Three cascades activate thyroid cell proliferation: the EGF-protein tyrosine kinase pathway, the phorbol ester-protein kinase C pathway and the thyrotropin-cyclic AMP pathway. While the first 2 cascades converge early, they remain distinct from the cyclic AMP cascade until very late in G1. The cyclic AMP cascade is characterized by an early and transient expression of c-myc, which may explain why it induces proliferation and differentiation expression. Constitutive activation of this cascade causes growth and hyperfunction, ie, hyperfunctioning adenomas. The various possible defects that could lead to such a constitutive activation are discussed. 相似文献

Hyperandrogenism in adolescent girls can be a troubling problem because of the difficulty in establishing a diagnosis and in prescribing appropriate therapy. Androgen excess in adolescent patients encompasses a spectrum of clinical presentations, including acne, hirsutism, oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea, virilism, and ovarian cysts. Androgen excess is a clinical and chemical feature of idiopathic hirsutism, late-onset forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and polycystic ovarian disease; in some cases, functional hyperandrogenism is discussed. We recommend screening for hyperandrogenism by measuring blood levels of testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and delta 4-androstenedione, while others propose a first dexamethasone suppression test for evaluation of free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and cortisol. Treatment will be chosen according to particular symptoms such as acne, hirsutism, obesity, or oligomenorrhea. 相似文献

The effects of a range of constant temperatures on gametogenesiswere investigated in two freshwater snail species which occursympatrically in the Umsin-dusi River, Natal, South Africa,Physa acuta (invasive) and Bulinus tropicus (endemic). Bothwere shown to be simultaneous hermaphrodites with slight protandry.An increase in temperature accelerated the process of gametogenesisbut P. acuta responded more rapidly to these changes than B.tropicus. This, coupled with the greater fecundity and shorterincubation period of P. acuta, gives it a reproductive advantageover the endemic species, providing a possible explanation forthe invasive's success in rapidly repopulating disturbed riverinehabitats. Growth rate of tagged juvenile turbot was significantly influenced by the interaction of temperature and fish size. The results suggest the optimum temperature for growth of juvenile turbot in the size range 25–75 g is between 16 and 19°C. Optimal temperature for growth decreased rapidly with increasing size, and is between 13 and 16°C for 100 g turbot. Although individual growth rates varied highly at all times within the temperature treatments, significant size rank correlations were maintained during the experimental period. The study confirms that turbot exhibit ontogenetic variation in temperature optimum, which might partly explain different spatial distribution of juvenile and adult turbot in ocean waters. 相似文献

Summary Traditionally, the adaptive value of mammalian white fat stores is considered in relation to longterm needs such as providing protection against the vagaries of winter or signalling the reproductive system when energy reserves are sufficient to risk pregnancy. As shown here, the fat stores of young house mice could not serve such needs. Despite prolonged acclimation and excess nesting material, food deprivation at 10°C significantly lowered the fat stores of peripubertal female house mice in only 12 h, and would exhaust them in 30 h. Even close to thermoneutrality (24°C) the calculated time to exhaustion was only 70 h. The fat stores of a young house mouse are obviously too meager to offer any meaningful protection over a winter of several months duration, or even over a 5–6-week cycle of pregnancy and lactation. Furthermore, in a wild habitat where food availability and ambient temperature can vary rapidly and greatly, such fat stores would be too labile to effectively coordinate puberty with somatic development. 相似文献

Comparison of the pick-and-smear and Saccomanno methods for sputum cytologic analysis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The two methods of preparing sputum specimens for cytologic study, the (fresh) pick-and-smear technique and the (blended) Saccomanno technique, were compared using 249 consecutive specimens. Two slides were prepared for each specimen by each technique. Of the specimens, 103 showed squamous metaplasia, carcinoma in situ or carcinoma. A semiquantitative rating system (0 to 4+) was used to determine the number of diagnostic cells for each method for those 103 cases. More diagnostic cells were found on the Saccomanno preparations (217) than on the fresh preparations (154). There were 121 diagnostic cells in the Saccomanno preparations versus 95 diagnostic cells in the fresh preparations from 63 squamous metaplasias; 7 versus 3 for the preparations from 5 carcinomas in situ; 64 versus 42 from 28 squamous cell carcinomas; 3 versus 1 from 1 large cell undiffernomas; and 12 diagnostic cells in Saccomanno preparations versus 5 in fresh preparations from 3 small cell cancers. Twelve squamous metaplasias, two carcinomas in situ, four squamous carcinomas, one adenocarcinoma and one small cell cancer had no diagnostic cells on the fresh preparations; four squamous metaplasias and one squamous carcinoma had no diagnostic cells on the Saccomanno preparations. More diagnostic information and fewer false-negative results were achieved with the Saccomanno technique. 相似文献
